Abstract
N-mono- or di-alkyl-formamides are produced by a process in which primary or secondary alkamines respectively are reacted at elevated temperature with carbon monoxide or gases containing carbon monoxide under pressure in the presence of alkali or alkaline earth alcoholates as catalyst. A methanolic solution of alkali or alkaline earth methylate, especially sodium methylate, is suitable as catalyst. Starting materials mentioned include methyl, ethyl, propyl and higher alkylamines. Carbon monoxide, water gas or generator gas may be used. In examples: (1) and (2) N-dimethyl-formamide, (3) N-dihexyl-formamide, (4) monohexyl-formamide, are obtained by heating dimethylamine, dihexylamine and monohexylamine respectively under pressure with carbon monoxide and sodium methylate in methanol. N-methyl formamide is stated to be prepared similarly. N - Dimethyl - formamide may be employed as a solvent for acetylene or polyacrylonitrile.
