Abstract
An aqueous formaldehyde solution is produced by a process in which methanol is oxidized and dehydrated in the presence of a silver catalyst using steam and preheated air at a temperature of from 500 DEG to 600 DEG C. with incomplete reaction of the methanol, in which the resulting gaseous reaction mixture obtained in the reaction is cooled to a temperature of substantially 100 DEG C. with simultaneous production of superheated steam, and is washed with the condensate obtained by further cooling the gaseous mixture and with water, in which the resulting aqueous formaldehyde-methanol solution is distilled in vacuo using the heat obtained in the condensation step and contained in the superheated steam, and in which the gaseous methanol constituting the overhead effluent of the distillation stage is partly recycled into the distillation stage with the addition of the methanol used for the reaction and partly returned in gaseous form to the methanol oxidation stage after having been compressed to the pressure used in the latter stage, the compression being carried out with the aid of a steam turbine which is operated with the superheated steam obtained in cooling the reaction gases.
