Abstract
A solution of formaldehyde is obtained by cooling to between 55 and 90 DEG C. the hot gases formed by the catalytic oxidation of methanol at 450-700 DEG C. by contacting said gases with condensate formed by cooling such gases to between 55 and 90 DEG C., continuously cooling and recycling enough of the liquid mixture thus produced to cool more of the hot gases to between 55 and 90 DEG C., and continously withdrawing the remainder. The finally withdrawn liquid may be rectified to remove methanol to give an aqueous formaldehyde solution from which a solid formaldehyde polymer (paraformaldehyde) may be obtained by cooling. The off-gases from the zone where the gases are cooled may be absorbed in water and methanol distilled from the solution to give a commercial formalin. The overall oxidation and condensing processes may be operated at elevated or reduced pressures. An inert gas may be present. Oxidation catalysts specified are silver, copper, silver/copper alloy, molybdenum oxide and iron oxide. Specification 421,691 is referred to.
