Abstract
Mixtures of formaldehyde, water and methanol substantially free from formic acid (removal of formic acid being effected by an anion-exchange resin) are rectified (see Group III) to obtain pure methanol overhead and a clear concentrated formaldehyde solution substantially free from formic acid and methanol as bottoms. The latter solution has a concentration of 65 to 85% formaldehyde and may be cooled to yield a linear formaldehyde polymer which is solid at room temperature and soluble in water.ALSO:Mixtures of formaldehyde, water and methanol substantially free from formic acid, containing 50% to 80% by weight of formaldehyde and a weight ratio of formaldehyde to water between 65:35 and 85:15, are rectified under top-of-tower pressures and temperatures of 160-660 mm. Hg. and 30 DEG -61 DEG C. with a methanol reflux ratio of 5:1 to 15:1, thereby distilling off substantially pure methanol overhead, and withdrawing as bottoms a clear concentrated formaldehyde solution substantially free from formic acid and methanol. Mixtures to be rectified may be those obtained from gases resulting from the catalytic oxidation at 450 DEG -700 DEG C. of gaseous mixtures of methanol and an oxygen-containing gas such as air, air and nitrogen, or air and steam, these gases being fractionally condensed at e.g. 55 DEG to 90 DEG C. or absorbed in a mixture of formaldehyde, water and methanol circulating at such temperatures. Any formic acid present is removed before rectification by treatment with an anion-exchange resin. The pure methanol obtained overhead may be used to prepare formaldehyde by vapour phase conversion as described above. The solution of formaldehyde obtained as bottoms has a concentration of 65 to 85% and can be cooled to yield a linear formaldehyde polymer which is solid at room temperature.
