Abstract

Monochlorodimethyl ether is recovered from the aqueous waste acid phase which is obtained in the reaction of methanol, or methylal, formaldehyde, or a polymeric formaldehyde, and hydrogen chloride, by blowing an inert gas through said aqueous phase at 0-60 DEG C. Suitable gases are air, nitrogen and hydrogen chloride. When hydrogen chloride is used, the gas with the entrained chloroether can be used as starting material in the monochlorodimethyl ether synthesis. The chloroether can be condensed from the gas stream leaving the aqueous phase by cooling. Examples relate to the use of hydrogen chloride.
