Abstract

One mol of phenol is condensed under alkaline conditions with 1-1.5 mols of formaldehyde until at least 90% of the formaldehyde has con-with the phenol, and the mixture is then vacuum distilled until a test sample of 100 grams of the mixture with 5 grams of ethyl alcohol will tolerate between 5 and 20 ml. of toluene at 25 DEG C. without separation of the condensate. The products are well suited for production of cellular products by addition of an acid hardening agent with or without a foaming agent, e.g. a volatile liquid such as di-isopropyl ether or a gas generator such as zinc dust, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or potassium nitrite which interacts with the acid hardener to produce gas; or benzene sulphonyl hydrazide which decomposes at the hardening temperature. A small proportion of polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl acetal, e.g. polyvinyl butyral may be added to the reaction mixture of phenol and formaldehyde or to the hardenable mixture of condensate, hardener and foaming agent. Suitable acid hardeners are sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric or an aromatic sulphonic acid.
