Abstract

1384318 Self-extinguishing phenolic foams SAINT-GOBAIN 12 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 16864/72 Heading C3C A process for obtaining phenol resin foams comprises mixing a resol, obtained by condensing a phenol formaldehyde mixture in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, with a blowing agent, an agent for controlling the formation of cells and an acid, wherein the formaldehyde and catalyst used for effecting the condensation of the phenol and formaldehyde are added to the phenol in at least two successive stages such that the proportion of free phenol remaining is less than 8% by weight of the total mass after concentration of the resol obtained by removal of water therefrom, while the total mole ratio of formaldehyde to phenol used is less than or equal to 1À7 : 1. In the examples phenol and formaldehyde are condensed using NaOH catalyst by adding the formaldehyde and NaOH in two stages to phenol. The resol thus obtained is foamed in the mould using pentane or monofluorotrichloromethane as foaming agent.
