Abstract

1488527 Resol/novolak foams CIBAGEIGY AG 7 Oct 1975 [7 Nov 1974] 48248/74 Headings C3C and C3R A synthetic resin foam is made by adding an aqueous solution of a rescorcinol-formaldehyde novolak and an acid which has a pKl of 2À2 or less to a phenol-formaldehyde resol, and a blowing agent to form an intimate mixture which is allowed to foam and harden. The acid may be hydrochloric, phosphoric, benzenesulphonic, o- or p-phenolsulphonic or toluene-psulphonic acid. In the examples mixtures of concentrated, aqueous solutions of resorcinol/ formaldehyde novolak and toluene- or phenolsulphonic acid, and optionally phosphoric acid, are added to phenol/formaldehyde resol, a trichlorotrifluoroethane and a surfactant viz. adducts of polyoxyethylene and nonylphenol, an alkyl aryl ether, castor oil or sorbitan monopalmitate, and the mixtures were stirred to form foams.
