Abstract

1350625 Calcium catalysed resins FIBERGLASS CANADA Ltd 8 June 1971 [8 June 1970] 23732/72 Heading C3R A highly dilutable calcium catalysed thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde aqueous resin solution is prepared by methylolating phenol with formaldehyde, in the absence of other monomers under alkaline conditions, in the presence of calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide as catalyst, and water as solvent, terminating the methylolation reaction by cooling while the condensation reaction product is still water soluble, the formaldehyde being introduced in an amount of 2À8 to 4À5 moles per mole of phenol, the calcium oxide or hydroxide being present in an amount of 3 to 5À5% by weight calcium based on the weight of phenol, the pH during tha reaction being 8À3 to 9À5, the reaction being carried out for at least 3 hours, at a temperature of up to 155‹ F., said reaction temperature being maintained at no higher than 125‹ F. during the first hour of reaction time. The pH of the reaction product is preferably adjusted to 7-7À6 by addition of acid. The reaction may be carried out in batches or continuously. The reaction product may be further reacted with up to 82% wt. of a condensable monomer or an amine type resin. Suitable monomers include urea, dicyandiamide, acetone, methanol and glycols. The reaction product may be characterized as follows:- (i) not over 2% wt. unreacted phenol; (ii) 3-16% wt. unreacted HCHO; (iii) 2À3 to 2À7 methylol groups per phenol molecule; (iv) virtual absence of water insoluble higher phenyls, and (v) low content of monomethylolphenol. The resins can be used in binder preparations and in example 6 such a binder is prepared by mixing a calciumcatalysed phenolic resin, neutralized with carbon dioxide, with ammonium sulphate solution and urea and then with NH 4 OH, a silicone solution and an oil emulsion, and then diluting with water.
