Abstract
1362938 Resols BAYER AG 18 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 7610/72 Heading C3R Resinous resols are prepared by reacting formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor in an addition reaction under alkaline conditions with a mixture of isomeric α,α<SP>1</SP>-bis(hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-diisopropylbenzenes and/or isomeric α,α<SP>1</SP> - bis - (hydroxyphenyl) - 1,4 - diisopropylbenzenes, preferably in the presence of an alcohol solvent at 30-140‹ C. using a molar ratio of HCHO:α,α<SP>1</SP> - bis - (hydroxyphenyl) - diisopropylbenzenes of 2 : 1 to 20 : 1. The resol may be cured to the resite in a 50-85 wt. per cent solution in an organic solvent by heating to 100-300‹ C. optionally in the presence of an acid catalyst and/or melamine resins, polyester resins, epoxy resins and polycarbonate resins. Uses.-Lacquer coating compositions for metals; casting resins; foams; compression moulded articles; and electrical insulation.
