Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled composition, prepared by adding an ammoniac compound and magnesium hydroxide in a specific proportion as a reaction catalyst for a phenol with formaldehyde, and having good impregnating property into a base material and improved electrical properties.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of phenol, e.g. cresol, is reacted with 1W1.5mol aldehyde, preferably further 0.005W0.15mol ammoniac compound and magnesium hydroxide in an amount of 0.01W0.1mol based on one mole ammoniac compound to give a phenolic resin. An oil-modified phenol prepared by adding 45W25pts.wt. plasticizer, e.g. tung oil, to 55W75pts.wt. phenol may be used in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst instead of the phenol. The resultant phenolic resin is dehydrated in vacuo and diluted with an organic solvent to give a concentration of 50W70wt% and give the aimed composition.
