Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain phenol resin with excellent fast hardening property, flowability and fusibility by a method wherein phenols and formaldehyde are subjected to reflux reaction in the presence of divalent metal salt and, after an acid in added, dehydration and furthermore, dehydrating condensation are carried out.
CONSTITUTION: Phenols and formaldehyde are subjected to reflux reaction in a range of mole ratio 0.6W0.95 in the presence of divalent metal salt and, after an acid is added so as to adjust pH to 1W5, dehydration in immediately carried out under vacuum without carrying out secondary reflux. Thereafter condensing and dehydrating reaction is promoted under atomospheric pressure to obtain a resin of which ortho-para ratio is 0.9W3.0. As a catalyst, a divalent metal salt with excellent ortho-orienting property, such as a metal salt selected from zinc acetate, manganese acetate, barium acetate, manganese nitrate, zinc borate or the like is used. As an acid catalyst, an acid selected from salicylic acid, phthalic acid, boric acid, oxalic acid, nitric acid or the like is used.
