Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a phenolic resin having high clarity and improved curing rate at an appropriate viscosity, by adding an amine catalyst at a specific reaction stage in the reaction of formaldehyde with the reaction product of a phenolic compound, a xylene resin and tung oil.
CONSTITUTION: In the reaction of formaldehyde with 400pts.wt. of the reaction product of phenol, a xylene resin and tung oil, 6W20pts.wt. of an amine (e.g. 25% aqueous ammonia, etc.) or a mixture of 3W10pts.wt. of an amine and 0.2W0.6pts. wt. of a metal hydroxide [e.g. Mg(OH)2, etc.] are added to the reaction system as catalysts at the initiation of the reaction. After the elapse of 60W90% of the whole reaction time, 3W10pts.wt. of the amine is further added and the reaction is completed.
EFFECT: The phenolic resin has improved impregnating property into substrate and the bond strength of the laminated sheet is improved. As the phenolic resin is modified with a xylene resin, it has excellent water resistance, electrical characteristics and dimension stability.
