Abstract
An aqueous solution, the pH of which is adjusted to 8.0 to 8.5, comprises 100 parts (weight) of a specified phenolic resin and 10 to 150 parts of an alkali lignin. The specified phenolic resins are those prepared by heating at below 90 DEG C. in aqueous solution 1 mole of phenolic compounds, not less than 90% of which is phenol itself, with 1.3 to 2.5 mols. formaldehyde in the presence of 0.04 to 0.15 mols. alkali hydroxide catalyst till the free formaldehyde content is 0.5 to 6.5%, any catalyst in excess of 0.10 moles per mole of phenolic material having been removed. Such resin is diluted with water, the lignin is added and the pH then adjusted with alkali hydroxide or ammonia, which latter should not be used if phenolic compounds other than phenol, e.g. cresols, are present in the resin. Optional ingredients specified are nitrogen compounds to tie up free formaldehyde and boron and phosphates to increase fire resistance. The solution may be used to bond mineral fibres and in an example are used to bond glass beads.
