Abstract

Epoxy resins are prepared by reacting in presence of alkali at a temperature between 60 DEG and 150 DEG C. a novolac resin prepared from a polyhydric phenol (not including a hydrocarbon or chlorine substituted mononuclear polyhydric phenol) and less than the equivalent amount of an aldehyde and at least 3 mols. of epichlorhydrin per phenolic hydroxyl equivalent of the novolac resin. Many phenols and aldehydes are referred to as suitable for making the novolac resin. The epichlorhydrin and novolac resin are mixed and alkali metal hydroxide then added continuously or intermittently to effect condensation. The alkali in amount at least equivalent to the phenolic hydroxyl groups is preferably added gradually as flakes or pellets. A small quantity of water is useful at the commencement of the reaction. Examples (1) and (3) describe the preparation epoxy resins from novolac resins prepared from 2,2 - bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) - propane and formaldehyde in presence of oxalic acid. Example (5) uses a novolac prepared from resorcinol and formaldehyde in presence of oxalic acid. Examples (2) and (4) compare glass cloth laminates prepared from resins according to the invention with laminates from conventional epoxy resins. The products of the invention cure with conventional curing agents some of which are mentioned. They may be mixed with fillers, dyes, pigments, plasticizers, and other resins, e.g. other epoxy resins, phenolic, urea or melamine resins.
