Abstract

Novolacs, having a solution viscosity as hereinafter defined of at least 120 centistokes, and sodium or potassium hydroxide are dissolved in water to give a solution capable of infinite dilution with water at 25 DEG C. without precipitation occurring. The "solution viscosity" is the viscosity at 25 DEG C., using a No. 3 Ostwald viscometer, of a solution of equal parts by weight of novolac and absolute alcohol. Cresol may replace in part phenol itself in preparing the novolac. In the example, phenol and commercial formalin (0,92 mole formaldehyde to 1,0 mole phenol) were reacted together using oxalic acid as catalyst to give a novolac with a solution viscosity of 160 centistokes, and 100 parts of this novolac, 10 parts of hexamethylene tetramine and 0,5 parts of zinc stearate were finely ground and added to 150 parts of water to which was then added 4 parts sodium hydroxide (as a 42,5% solution in water). The resultant solution can be used to bond mineral and cellulosic fibres.
