Abstract

Alcohol-soluble lignin-modified phenolic resins are formed by the condensation of "low-temperature lignin" in the presence of an acid catalyst at a temperature of at least 130 DEG C. with a phenolformaldehyde condensate. "Low temperature lignin" is obtained by removal by hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose from cellulosic material using aqueous hydrochloric acid of up to 42% concentration by weight at a temperature preferably not exceeding 30 DEG C. A resol type resin is prepared, which is diluted with phenol (to avoid spontaneous hardening) before the lignin is added. Water formed during the reaction is distilled off, the mixture neutralised and filtered, and the excess phenol removed under reduced pressure. Besides phenol the xylenols may be used to produce the resol, and the formaldehyde may be in the form of formalin, paraformaldehyde or trioxy-methylene. Modifications of the process described are:-(1) The lignin and acid catalyst can first be added to part of the phenol diluent, the mixture allowed to stand until the exothermic reaction ceases, and then condensed with the resol, (2) A novolac can replace the resol, the lignin-modified novolac subsequently being hardened with hexamethylene tetramine, (3) A crude cellulose hydrolysate containing lignin and sugars can be used, (4) A thermoplastic or an uncured thermosetting synthetic resin e.g. terpene modified phenolic may be included in the reaction mixture producing the novolac or the resol. Eleven examples describe the invention and its modifications and four comparative examples are included. Specified uses for the product are (1) moulding powders, (2) foundry sands, (3) ionexchange resins, (4) laminates. Specifications 827,921 and 827,922 are referred to.
