Abstract

Leather is treated (see Group VIII) with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a condensation product containing both phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, it being water-insoluble when in the form of the free acid and being obtainable by known methods. Water-soluble salts of phenolic resins in which some hydroxyl groups are esterified or etherified with compounds containing carboxyl groups, e.g. chloracetic acid, may also be used. Examples refer to the ammonium salt of (1) the product from 1 mol. salicyclic acid, 2 mols. 4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphone and 3 mols. formaldehyde; (2) a sodium salt by reacting the product from 1 mol. cresol and 0.7 mol. formaldehyde with 1.2 mols. sodium hydroxide and 0.55 mol. chloracetic acid; (3) a potassium salt by reacting the product from 1 mol. phenol and 0.6 mol. formaldehyde with 1.6 mol. potassium hydroxide and 0.75 mol. chloracetic acid.
