Abstract
Cation-exchange resins are made by reacting a cross-linked condensation product of an aldehyde and an hydroxyphenoxyacetic acid with a chloracetate under alkaline conditions. The alkaline conditions may be produced by a caustic alkali, sodium carbonate, ammonia and pyridine. Specified hydroxyphenoxy acetic acids are o-, m- and p-hydroxy phenoxy acetic acid. If o or p-hydroxyphenoxy acetic acid is used as the starting material, then a cross-linking agent, e.g. phenol, resorcinol catechol or pyrogallol is also used. In the examples: (1) a cation-exchange resin is made by reacting sodium chloracetate and sodium hydroxide with an m-hydroxyphenoxy acetic acid condensate prepared as described in the Specification 780,750, [Group IX]; (2) p-hydroxyphenoxy acetic acid made from catechol and sodium chloracetate is condensed with phenol and formalin, the resultant condensate being reacted with sodium chloracetate and sodium hydroxide.
