Abstract

Thermosetting resins are produced by first preparing in alkaline solution a substantially monomeric monomethylol acetone and successively reacting it in alkaline solution with (1) phenol and/or cresol and (2) formaldehyde to form a resin, to which water-insoluble alkali lignin is added. In modifications, all or part of the lignin may be added to the phenol, or to the phenolmethylolacetone reaction product, before reaction with formaldehyde. In Example (1) a water-dilutable laminating varnish is produced by refluxing acetone with formaldehyde in presence of sodium carbonate. Phenol is added with more sodium carbonate and finally more formaldehyde and sodium carbonate. The formalin and alkali are added separately and alternately in small portions. Lignin caustic soda and methanol are added to the cooled product which is then used to impregnate Kraft paper for laminating. (2) is similar but uses a mixture of phenol and cresol.
