Abstract

Resol resins are made by condensing a molar excess of a phenolic material with formaldehyde in the presence of an oxide or hydroxide of a divalent electropositive metal at a pH of from 4 to 7 to produce a non-heat-hardenable novolak, reacting this resin in the liquid phase with formaldehyde in the presence of alkali at a pH above 7 and stopping the condensation before the resol becomes insoluble. The molar ratio of condensed formaldehyde to phenol in the product is greater than 1 : 1. The phenolic material comprises phenol, meta-cresol, metaethyl phenol and mixtures thereof amongst themselves or with other phenolic compounds. The oxides or hydroxides exemplified are those of barium, strontium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, cadmium, coblatous cobalt, lead, iron, chromium, tin and nickel. Alkali condensing agents specified for the second stage comprise in addition to the oxides and hydroxides enumerated above, alkali metal carbonates, ammonia and organic bases. In the example, 3000 parts of phenol, 658 parts of 36.35 per cent aqueous formaldehyde and 30 parts of Cd(OH)2 were refluxed and the water allowed to distil off to a temperature of 160 DEG C., the phenol then being removed by vacuum distillation. 265.7 parts of the resultant novolak were mixed with 285.5 parts of water and 62.8 parts of NaOH, 167.5 parts of formalin added to the solution which was heated to 95 DEG C. The product was suitable as an adhesive for plywood.
