Abstract

Cation-exchange resins having both sulphonic (-SO3H) and acetic (-CH2.COOH, =CH. COOH, or ­C.COOH) acid groups are prepared by condensing in alkaline medium an aldehyde, a phenol sulphonate, and an additional reagent being phenol itself, hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol, pyrogallol or a tannin other than myrobalans tannin, or partial condensates of these, with mono-, di-, or tri-chloracetic acid (present as a salt of the alkali used), or with a partial condensate of a phenol, an aldehyde and a chloracetate, or treating a resin prepared according to Specification 588,380 (or its intermediate) with a chloracetate in alkaline medium, and drying the resulting gel. Specified tannins are quebracho (natural or sulphited), mimosa, and bambier. A sulphiting agent, e.g. sodium metabisulphite, may be included among the reagents. In examples: (1) a viscous partial condensate of quebracho tannin, chloracetic acid and formaldehyde is condensed in the presence of caustic soda with sodium phenolsulphonate, phenol and paraformaldehyde; (2) a similar viscous partial condensate is mixed with a viscous partial condensate of sodium phenolsulphonate, phenol, quebracho tannin and paraformaldehyde, and the condensation completed; (3) a viscous partial condensate of sodium phenolsulphonate, hydroquinone and formaldehyde is condensed with chloracetic acid; (4) sodium phenolsulphonate, quebracho tannin, paraformaldehyde and chloracetic acid are condensed; (5) a viscous partial condensate of sodium phenolsulphonate, quebracho tannin and paraformaldehyde is condensed with sodium metabisulphite and chloracetic acid. Specifications 598,130 and 608,516 also are referred to.ALSO:Cations are exchanged, for example, in water-softening, in a solution of electrolyte by treating it with a synthetic resinous condensation product having exchangeable cations associated with both sulphonic and acetic acid groups (see Group IV).
