Abstract

Wood or similar material is glued together by aqueous solutions of the alkaline condensation products of phenols, phenol sulphonic acids and formaldehyde; the gluing being performed in the presence of acids. Specified phenols are phenol, cresols, xylenols and other phenol homologues. Specified acids are sulphuric, hydrochloric, formic, sulphonic acids of aromatic hydrocarbons, the acid obtained by acidifying the condensation product of phenol sulphonic acid and formaldehyde in the presence of alkali, and the product obtained by sulphonating novolaks. In examples, (1) The sodium salt of phenol-para-sulphonic acid and formaldehyde are heated in presence of caustic soda, phenol is added and the mixture agitated. Sulphuric acid is added to the resultant solution which is used to glue wood. (2) The solution of example (1) is spray dried, dissolved in water and mixed with p-toluene-sulphonic acid. (3) The sodium salt of a sulphonation product of technical cresol, phenol and formaldehyde are condensed in presence of caustic soda. The product is spray dried and its aqueous solution is mixed with p-toluene-sulphonic acid. Specifications 703,233 and 703,234 are referred to.
