Abstract

Tanning agents are obtained by condensing in an acid medium formaldehyde, diphenyl sulphonic acid, at least one alkyl benzene sulphonic acid having two replaceable hydrogen atoms in the nucleus and 4.41-dihydroxy diphenyl sulphone or a formaldehyde condensation product thereof obtained in alkaline medium. In examples: (1) Xylene and diphenyl are sulphonated with phenol until water solubility is obtained. After cooling and dilution 4.41-dihydroxy diphenylsulphone and formaldehyde are added and the whole condensed for several hours at 90-95 DEG C. (2) A mixture of xylene, isopropylbenzene and diphenyl are sulphonated and the product cooled, diluted and condensed with formaldehyde for an hour at 90 DEG C. 4.41-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone and more formaldehyde are added and the condensation completed. (3) Xylene and diphenyl are sulphonated and the product cooled and diluted. Formaldehyde and the resinous product obtained by condensing 4.41-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone, caustic soda and formaldehyde at 80 DEG C. for 8 hours are added and the condensation completed at 90-95 DEG C. The products of all examples are diluted, neutralized, e.g. with ammonia, and acidified to the required pH, e.g. with formic or acetic acid.
