Abstract
A synthetic tannin is made by condensing in aqueous alkaline medium (1) a novolak resin of molecular weight between 600 and 1800 obtained from phenol, cresol or xylenol and formaldehyde or a formaldehyde yielding compound; (2) an alkali metal salt of sulphurous acid (e.g. sodium or potassium sulphite, bisulphite or metabisulphite) in an amount to provide from 0.1 to 0.5 molecular proportions of combined sulphur dioxide for each aromatic ring in the novolak; and (3) formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde in an amount to provide 1-6 molecular proportions of formaldehyde for each molecular proportion of combined sulphur dioxide in said salt. Preferably the reaction mixture is heated at 30-130 DEG C. (preferably 70-100 DEG C.) for 75-360 minutes, after which it is cooled and acidified to pH 3.0-4.7 with glycollic plus sulphuric or phosphoric acid. The novolaks are obtained by refluxing 2 mols. of phenol with 1.0-1.2 mols. of formaldehyde at 90-96 DEG C. for 2-6 hours in presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid. In examples: (1), (3) and (4) a phenol-formaldehyde novolak was heated with formaldehyde and sodium sulphite; (2) a xylenol-formaldehyde novolak was heated with formaldehyde and sodium sulphite.
