Abstract

Resoles soluble in weak alkalies to at the most faintly phenolphthalein-alkaline reaction, are made by condensing dihydroxydiarylsulphones with formaldehyde (or substances yielding it) in a concentrated solution the alkalinity of which lies between the neutral point and the beginning of phenolphthaleinalkaline reaction. Fillers may be mixed with aqueous solutions (reacting at most faintly phenolphthalein-alkaline) of the resoles, and the mixture hardened; fillers, e.g. sawdust, may be mixed with the resoles and the mixture dried and hot-pressed, or there may also be added (before or after condensation) aliphatic polyhydric alcohols such as glycol, glycerol or its polymers or condensation products, or dimethylolacetone, the mixtures being then mouldable by cold pressure. Dilute weaklyalkaline aqueous solutions of the resoles may be used for impregnating textiles and wall- and other papers and for after-treating formaldehyde- or chrome-tanned leather. In examples: (1), (2), (3) dihydroxydiphenylsulphone or a sulphone prepared from (2) crude cresol or (3) m-cresol by the process of Specification 471,010 and formaldehyde; (4) dihydroxydiphenylsulphone and paraformaldehyde, are condensed in the presence of caustic alkalies such as caustic soda or potash, of the hydroxides of the alkaline earths, of carbonates such as sodium and potassium carbonates, or of borax or phosphates. German Specification 464,088 is referred to.
