Abstract
324,913. Hessen, R. Nov. 5, 1928. Phenol-aldehyde condensation products are obtained by mixing the components in molecular proportions, condensing them by refluxing in the presence of a basic contact substance, removing the resulting aqueous layer from the resinous layer, adding further amounts of formaldehyde (one-third to one-quarter of the amount originally used) to the resinous layer, condensing and again removing the aqueous layer, these three latter operations being repeated two to four times until no free phenol remains in the resinous layer. In the subsequent additions of formaldehyde, a further amount of basic contact substance may also be added. After removal of the catalyst by neutralizing and washing, the resulting resins are relatively thin liquids, and are easily freed from water by evaporation. The solid resins are water-clear, soluble in alcohol, acetone, caustic soda, &c., and may be hardened by heating to temperatures commencing at about 60‹ C. Examples are given.
