Abstract

Phenol-aldehyde condensation products.-Resitols, free from phenols, water and volatile bases, are obtained by heating, preferably repeatedly heating, solid initial phenol-aldehyde condensation products, in thin layers for a short time to elevated temperatures, and thereby converting the same partially into resites. The conversion process is continued so long as the resitol formed can be shaped and converted into the resite phase. In an example, a solid initial product is brought on to a plate at 100-200 DEG C., and rolled into a thin layer. The operation is repeated till no more vapours are given off and the product becomes elastic on heating. The course of the reaction may be controlled by the degree of solubility of the resitol formed since the finely-powdered resitols are said to be in part soluble in alcohol, acetone or phenol. Formaldehyde and polymers thereof such as paraform or homologues of formaldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine may be added to the resols as hardening agents or novolaks may be used and the same converted into resols by hexamethylene-tetramine &c. In another example a resol is heated on a mixing roller at 150-180 DEG C., rolled out to 0,5 mm. thickness for 15-30 secs., and then rapidly removed from the roller. The operation is repeated till the powdered resitol contains 20-25 per cent soluble and fusible constituents, i.e. resols can be shaped by heat and pressure.
