Abstract
Tanning-agents are obtained by after-treating with formaldehyde and an unsulphonated phenol or naphthol, not containing halogen or a carboxylic acid or sulphone group, a water-soluble sulphonated product obtained by condensing a phenol or a naphthol or a sulphonic acid thereof with formaldehyde and sulphonating, if necessary. The sulphonated products may be partly neutralized with caustic soda, ammonia, magnesium oxide or an organic base before they are after-treated, or the after-treatment may be effected in a neutral or alkaline medium. Reagents which yield formaldehyde may be used in place of formaldehyde. The products may be modified by adding urea and formaldehyde before, during or after the after-treatment. In the examples: (1) a mixture of m- and p-cresol is sulphonated and condensed with formaldehyde, and the product is partly neutralized with ammonia or caustic soda and then treated with the same cresol mixture and formaldehyde; (2) as in example 1, except that the neutralization step is omitted; (3) a mixture of phenol, cresols and xylenols, obtained by the hydrogenation of brown coal, is sulphonated and condensed with formaldehyde, and the product is after-treated with the same phenolic mixture and formaldehyde; (4) a mixture of m- and p-cresol is sulphonated and condensed with formaldehyde, and the product is treated with urea and formaldehyde, and then partly neutralized with ammonia; after-treatment with the same cresol mixture and formaldehyde follows; the cresol mixture may be replaced by the phenolic mixture used in example 3; (5) the phenolic mixture used in example 3 is sulphonated and condensed with formaldehyde, and the product is made alkaline with ammonia or caustic soda and then treated with the same phenolic mixture and formaldehyde; urea and formaldehyde are then added, and finally the acidity of the product is adjusted by adding acetic anhydride; the treatment with urea and formaldehyde may precede the treatment with the phenol mixture and formaldehyde.
