Abstract
Tanning-agents are obtained by combining (a) a synthetic tanning-agent of the sulphonic acid type, or (b) a tanning-agent comprising a phenol-aldehyde condensation product condensed or peptized with an aromatic sulphonic acid which itself has only a weak tanning action, with (c) a phenol-aldehyde condensation product prepared in the presence of a sulphite under conditions which yield a product of insufficient solubility for use as a tanning-agent per se. Suitable components of type (a) are obtained by sulphonating phenol, cresols, naphthalene, or alkyl- or aralkylnaphthalenes and condensing the products, if necessary, with formaldehyde. A suitable component of type (b) is prepared by condensing naphthalene-sulphonic acid at about 80 DEG C. with a water-insoluble phenol-formaldehyde condensation product. Suitable components of type (c) are obtained by condensing phenol, cresols, xylenols, naphthols, dihydroxydiphenylmethane or dihydroxydiphenylethane with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde and a sulphite under conditions which yield a product containing 5-6 per cent of sulphur. In the examples: (1) a condensation product from sulphonated phenol and formaldehyde is mixed with a product, containing 5-6 per cent of sulphur, obtained from commercial cresol, formaldehyde and sodium sulphite; (2) a condensation product from b -naphthol, commercial cresol and formaldehyde, prepared in the presence of sodium carbonate, is heated with a sulphonation product of commercial cresol, and the product is mixed with a product obtained from commercial cresol, formaldehyde, and sodium sulphite.
