Abstract
A water-soluble tanning agent is made by reacting together in an acid medium (1) a condensation product of para-cresol sulphonic acid with formaldehyde with (2) a condensation product of phenol or 4,41-dihydroxy diphenylsulphone with formaldehyde; the molecular proportions of para-cresol sulphonic acid to phenol being between 0.7:1 and 1.5:1 or of para-cresol sulphonic acid to 4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyl-sulphone being substantially 2:1. The reaction may be performed in presence of urea. When reaction is complete the product is neutralized and acidified with an organic acid, e.g. formic, acetic or oxalic acid. The products may be clarified with sodium hydrosulphite, spray dried or fluidized by the addition of naphthalene monosulphonic acid or tetrahydronaphthalene monosulphonic acid. In examples: (1) and (2) phenol and formalin are condensed in presence of oxalic acid and after removing water the condensation product is reacted with a condensation product of paracresol sulphonic acid and formaldehyde; (3) the reaction of examples 1 and 2 is performed in presence of urea; (4) tetrahydronaphthalene is added to the product of example 1; (5) dihydroxydiphenylsulphone, sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite, and formalin are condensed in presence of caustic soda, then sulphuric acid is added and the upper aqueous layer removed; this condensation product is then condensed with a condensation product of para-cresol sulphonic acid and formaldehyde in presence of urea and additional formaldehyde; (6) dihydroxydiphenylsulphone is condensed with formaldehyde in presence of caustic soda, sodium bisulphite, additional formaldehyde and additional caustic soda are added and condensation continued; the resulting condensation product is precipitated with sulphuric acid and reacted with a condensation product of para-cresol sulphonic acid and formaldehyde as in example 5.
