Abstract
A powdered adhesive, wholly or partially soluble in water, contains a mixture, hardenable by heating in the absence of hardening agents, of unsulphonated condensation products of phenols and formaldehyde and condensation products of phenols and formaldehyde which contain neutralized sulphonic acid groups. Specified phenols are phenol, the cresols and the xylenols. The adhesive may be mixed with melamine- or carbamide-formaldehyde resins. In examples, (1) An acid catalysed phenol-formaldehyde condensate is sulphonated, neutralized, converted into a dry powder and mixed with a powdered alkali catalysed phenol-formaldehyde condensate. (2) A phenol is partially sulphonated and condensed, if desired after its neutralization, with formaldehyde in alkaline medium. It is then converted into a powder. (3) A phenol sulphonic acid is neutralized, condensed with formaldehyde in alkaline solution and mixed with a solution of an alkali catalysed phenol-formaldehyde condensate. Alkali is added to the resultant solution which is then dried. (4) A mixture of phenol and phenol sulphonic acid is neutralized and condensed with formaldehyde in alkaline solution which is then dried. Specifications 703,234 and 703,235 are referred to.
