Abstract

An aqueous thermosetting liquid phenolic adhesive having not over 40 per cent total solids content is made by dissolving in an aqueous thermosetting phenol-aldehyde resin syrup a lesser proportion, compared to the resin solids content. of an alkali-soluble proteinous adhesive base, the syrup having, when adjusted to 40 per cent resin solids, a boiling water bath gel time of less than 100 minutes, a pH between 9.5 and 12, and being free from aldehyde odour. The resin syrup is preferably made from phenol, formalin and caustic soda, though meta-cresol may be substituted wholly or in part for the phenol. Other reactants specified are mixed phenols containing not over 25 per cent by weight of alkyl phenols, other than meta-cresol, except 3 : 5-xylenol and resorcinol which, if present, should not exceed 10 per cent by weight of the phenols, acetaldehyde, furfural, and sodium carbonate, which may partly replace the caustic soda. The syrup may be made from 1.1 to 3.5 mols. of aldehyde and from 0.3 to 1.2 mols. of caustic soda per mol. of phenol, provided that at least 1/7 mol. of caustic soda is used for each mol. of aldehyde. Excess aldehyde is destroyed by reaction with the caustic soda. Modifiers, which may be used in making the syrup, are caustic soda, caustic potash, calcium hydroxide, sodium silicate and pine oil. Proteinous adhesive constituents specified are: soyabean flour, other oleoginous seed meal flours, soluble blood albumen, and solubilized keratin. Fillers specified are nutshell flour, china clay, bentonite, wood flour, bark flour and waste sulphite liquor solids. The resin syrup may be spray-dried to form a powder which can be re-dissolved in water prior to making the adhesive, or the complete adhesive composition may be spray-dried and stored. The syrup employed in the examples is made by refluxing phenol and formalin with an initial portion of caustic soda until a desired viscosity is attained, and subsequently adding increments of aqueous caustic soda with refluxing after each addition, until the desired degree of condensation has been attained. Numerous examples are given. The adhesives may be used for making fir-plywood, laminating paper and other sheet materials, and for binding comminuted materials to produce hot-pressed shaped articles.
