Abstract
Cation-exchange resins are produced by the alkali-catalysed condensation of the water-soluble sulphonates of phenol, cresol, catechol, hydroquinone (or a mixture of these) with formaldehyde, in the presence of one or more of the compounds phenol, hydroquinone, catechol, resorcinol, pyrogallol or a natural or sulphited tannin, in amount between one-half and one and one-half times the weight of the phenol to be sulphonated. After drying below 130 DEG C., the product is heated at between 130-210 DEG C. for several hours. To render granulation of the product easier, a neutral, soluble metallic salt is added to the reaction mixture, salts of alkali metals being preferred. In examples (1) phenol sulphonic acid, formaldehyde and phenol are condensed with sodium hydroxide as catalyst; (2), (3), (4) mixtures of phenol and quebracho tannin, pyrocatechol and hydroquinone respectively are used; (5) sodium carbonate is employed as catalyst; (6) cresol sulphonic acid, hydroquinone and formaldehyde with sodium hydroxide catalyst; (7) and (8) sodium chloride is used as a granulating agent; (9) the neutral salt is formed in situ by neutralization of excess acid used in the sulphonation.
