Abstract
In a process for pelleting furnace carbon black by agitation with a restricted amount of water, e.g. 64 or 74 parts per 100 parts of furnace black, a minor proportion, e.g. 0.1 to 0.5 part per 100 parts of furnace black, of a surface active agent is included in the furnace black-water mixture. Suitable agents, which may be either premixed with the water or added separately preferably in 10 per cent aqueous solution, are: a condensation product of sulphonated naphthalene, a sodium salt of condensed sulphonic acid, sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate, commercial "saponin," tannic acid, "Quebracho extract-dry," sodium salt of aryl alkyl poly-ether sulphonate, long chain fatty acid basic amide, cetyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, aryl alkyl poly-ether alcohol, sodium salt of aryl alkyl ether sulphate, dibutyl phenyl phenol sodium disulphonate, "Dreft," sodium sulpholignate, or magnesium barium lignin sulphonates. The furnace black may be de-aerated prior to agitation and sharp blades may be used for the initial agitation. U.S.A. Specification 2,127,137 and U.S.A.
