Abstract

305,013. Geigy Soc. Anon., J. R. Jan. 28, 1928, [Convention date]. Sulphonated phenols-urea-formaldehyde condensation products are produced by sulphonating the phenol and then adding urea or a substance yielding urea, and formaldehyde or a medium which generates formaldehyde, or adding to the sulphonated phenol the condensation product of urea and formaldehyde. In examples, (1) phenol, cresol, or resorcinol is sulphonated and the solution is diluted and cooled to 25‹ C.; urea and then formaldehyde are added and the mixture is heated to 80‹-95‹ C., after which soda lye is added until a water-soluble product is obtained; (2) cresol is sulphonated with an equal quantity of sulphuric acid, and a solution obtained by boiling calcium cyanamide with water precipitating the calcium with sulphuric acid, filtering, and concentrating, is added, the reaction mixture not being allowed to exceed 40‹ C.; formaldehyde is added and the mixture is heated to 80‹-95‹ C.; (3) salicylic acid is sulphonated, diluted, and cooled to 40‹-50‹ C.; the crystal paste is separated and treated with urea and formaldehyde and heated to 110‹-120‹ C.; (5) phenol or cresol is sulphonated, diluted, and cooled at 30‹ C., formaldehyde is added carefully by drops, the temperature not being allowed to exceed 30‹ C. ; more water is added, followed by the pulverized condensation product obtained from urea and formaldehyde in presence of sulphuric acid, and the reaction mixture is heated to 85‹-90‹ C. The products are alkali soluble and useful as tanning agents and for weighting silk.
