Abstract

5-(3,4-dihydroxybenzyl)-S-methyl hydantoin is prepared by heating 5-(3,4-methylendioxybenzyl)-5-methyl hydantoin in a melt of an excess of a phenol in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong proton yielding or Lewis acid and of water in an amount of 0.1-3% by weight based on the amount of the phenol. The phenol may be phenol, resorcinol, a cresol or phloroglucinol. The catalyst may be phenol sulphonic acid, p-toluene-sulphonic acid, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, boron trifluoride or zinc chloride. The starting material may be obtained by reacting 3,4-methylene-dioxy-phenol-acetone with NaCN and (NH4)2CO3. The amount of formaldehyde acceptor is 5-20 moles and that of the acid is 0.05-0.5 moles based on the hydantoin.
