Abstract
A gelatine solution having substantially stable viscosity up to about 60 C. and cross-linkable by heating to a higher temperature contains in aqueous solution in addition to gelatine a compound including formaldehyde in chemically bound form and a delaying agent comprising an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic primary or secondary amine (which may in certain circumstances be replaced by ammonia), the pH of the solution being between 7 and 10. The formaldehyde compound may be hexamethylene tetramine (HMT) or a phenol-formaldehyde resole HMT may be used with a phenol (reacting to produce a resole and ammonia). When a phenol-formaldehyde resole is present the amine may be replaced by ammonia. The compositions may be used for coating or moulding and as adhesives for abrasive granules.
