Abstract
1,225,615. Novolaks. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Sept., 1968 [5 Oct., 1967], No. 45543/67. Heading C3R. Novolaks are produced from formaldehyde and a molar excess of a phenolic component comprising an acetophenone-free p-cumylphenol-containing fraction obtained from the tarry waste product of the manufacture of phenol by decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide. The tarry waste product may contain tar, inorganic materials and a volatile fraction comprising pcumylphenol (12-30%), 1-phenyl isopropanol (10-20%), trimethylphenylindene (2-10%) diphenylmethylpentenes - 1 and 2 (10-30%), and acetophenone. The volatile fraction may be isolated by flash distillation under reduced pressure and then the acetophenone removed by a futher distillation at reduced pressure. 25- 35% of this product may be mixed with phenol to form the phenolic material. The formaldehyde may be in aqueous solution. The reactants may be heated at a temperature below 100‹ C. in the presence of 0À5-2% oxalic acid as catalyst. When reaction is complete, water may be removed under reduced pressure and the temperature of the still allowed to rise above 100‹ C. On cooling the product sets and may be broken up in a two-roll mill, mixed with additional formaldehyde and cured hot or under alkaline conditions.
