Abstract
A process for the purification of a phenol that has been prepared by the partial oxidation operations of a secondary aromatic alkyl hydrocarbon to form an alpha hydroxy peroxide derivative thereof, acid catalyzed cleavage of said derivative to form a phenol and a ketone, aliphatic , neutralizing the splitting reaction mixture and separating the neutralized reaction mixture from a fraction containing the phenol and impurities comprising carbonyl compounds, characterized in that at least a part of said impurities comprising carbonyl compounds is separated of the phenol fraction by mixing H2O with the fraction, contacting the resulting mixture at a high temperature with a catalytic compound selected from the group consisting of silica-alumina, silica-zirconium oxide, alumina-zirconium oxide and silica-alumina zirconium oxide thus converting said carbonyl compounds in compounds having lower boiling points, and distilling said compounds from the phenol.
