Abstract

Pure phenol is obtained from reaction mixtures produced by the acid cleavage of isopropylbenzene hydroperoxide in which after the elimination of the acid catalyst and the distillation of the acetone, the hydrocarbons contained in the mixture are separated from phenol and the constituents having higher boiling points by azeotropic distillation in the presence of water, the greater part of the phenol itself is separated from the residue containing acetophenone, dimethylphenylcarbinol as well as cumyl phenol and other polymerisation and condensation products in a subsequent column and is transformed into pure phenol in one or more subsequent distillation columns, while the residue produced in the crude phenol column is cracked by heating in the sump of a column or other suitable vessel provided with a return flow of the aqueous phase from the hydrocarbon column, and the vapours from the cracking column are fed without intermediate condensation into a subsequent distillation column also provided with a return flow of the aqueous phase from the hydrocarbon column and the vapours are distilled in such a manner that the acetophenone remains in the sump of this column and the vapours containing low boiling point cracking products are returned into the hydrocarbon column without intermediate condensation. In an example a residue from the phenol distillation containing 20% phenol is cracked and processed according to the invention and the acetophenone residue obtained from the sump of the column following the cracking column is found to contain only 6.5% phenol.
