A process for the preparation of a phenol by the acid-catalyzed cleavage of a hydroperoxided derivative of a secondary-aromatic alkyl hydrocarbon, wherein the splitting reaction mixture comprising phenol, aliphatic ketone and catalyst acid is neutralized by contacting said mixing with an anion exchange resin, phenol and ketone are recovered from the neutralized reaction mixture, and then the spent anion exchange resin is regenerated by treatment with an alkaline solution, characterized by the improvement comprising contacting the spent resin before of the treatment with the alkaline solution with an aliphatic ketone thus displacing residual phenol sorbed from the spent resin and recovering the resulting displaced residual phenol.
