Abstract

Methylal is continuously manufactured by acetalizing an aqueous mixture of formaldehyde and methanol in the presence of a cationic exchange resin as catalyst, the methylal formed being continuously removed from the reaction mixture and the methanol and formaldehyde being present in the mixture in substantially the theoretically required proportions. The preferred cationic exchange resins are those containing sulphonic acid groups and/or carboxyl groups.
