1284861 Ortho- and para-methylated phenols CHEMISCHE WERKE LOWI GmbH 8 Jan 1970 944/70 Heading C2C The invention comprises a process for the production of ortho- and para-methylated phenols by conversion of a phenol which has a hydrogen atom in the ortho- and para-position to the hydroxyl group, with a greater than stoichiometric amount of methanol in the presence of aluminium methylate as catalyst at a temperature of 280-420‹ C. by continuously passing the methanol through the liquid phenol and drawing off the unreacted methanol and water formed during the reaction wherein during the reaction the catalyst is maintained at a pH 1-3 by means of an organic or inorganic acid.
