Abstract
Saligenin (o-hydroxybenzyl alcohol) is manufactured by reacting phenol with formaldehyde at a temperature not exceeding 70 DEG C. in the presence of a basic compound of an alkaline earth metal as a condensing agent and an alcohol as solvent under substantially anhydrous conditions. Specified condensing agents include the oxides and hydroxides of calcium, strontium and barium, and the formaldehyde may be supplied as such, or in the form of a solid polymer. In examples: (1) paraformaldehyde is added to a methanolic solution of phenol containing powdered calcium oxide, the mixture stirred at 40 DEG C., then neutralized, steam-distilled and the saligenin extracted from the residue with benzene; (2) as in (1) but employing a solution of gaseous formaldehyde in methanol.
