Abstract

Films of regenerated cellulose, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose, methylol ureas, melamine formaldehyde resins, low molecular weight polyacrylamides, poly - (N - hydroxyalkylacrylamide), poly - (ethylene glycol monoacrylate) and polyvinylmethyl ether, are rendered absorbent to ultra-violet light by incorporating a compound of the general formula <FORM:0671857/IV (a)/1> where one R is hydrogen and the other a sulphonic acid group which has been neutralized by an alkali metal base, an alkaline earth metal base, ammonia or an amine which may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic, e.g. sodium or cyclohexyl amine salts of 2,4 - dihydroxybenzophenone - 5 - sulphonic acid.
