Abstract
Thiosemicarbazones of the general formula <FORM:0679894/IV (b)/1> are prepared by reacting hydrazine with carbon disulphide and an alcoholate to form a salt of dithiocarbazinic acid, reacting said salt with an alkylating agent to form an alkyl ester of dithiocarbazinic acid, condensing the ester with a compound of the formula R1R2CO and treating the condensation product R1R2C= N-CSS.alk so formed with ammonia to yield the thiosemicarbazone. In the formul , R1 and R2 are hydrogen, aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic groups but not both are hydrogen, and the groups may be substituted, e.g. by OH, NH2, NO2, CH3CONH, halogen or C2H5SO2 groups. In examples: (1) hydrazine hydrate is treated with alcoholic potassium hydroxide and carbon disulphide and then methyl iodide is added to produce the methyl ester of dithiocarbazinic acid which is treated with p-acetaminobenzaldehyde and finally with ammonia in alcohol to produce p-acetamino-benzaldehyde - thiosemicarbazone; and in a similar manner (2) 5-nitrofurfural-thiosemicarbazone, and (3) acetone-thiosemicarbazone are prepared.
