Abstract

The invention comprises benziminazoles of the formula <FORM:0677540/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl. These are made by reacting 4 : 5-dimethyl-o-phenylene diamine or its N-methyl derivative with formaldehyde, formic acid or a chemical equivalent of formic acid, i.e. ethyl or other orthoformate, diaryl (e.g. diphenyl), alkaryl or dialkylformamidine, formimino-ether (e.g. ethyl isoformanilide), dithioformates, formamide, ethyl formate, or hydrogen cyanide or its hydrogen chloride addition products. Examples show the production of the two compounds of the invention and the picrate of the N-methyl compound. N - thioformyl - 4 : 5 - dimethyl - o - phenylene diamine is an intermediate for the latter when using sodium dithioformate.
