Abstract

Pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol are produced by condensing formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in a molar ratio greater than 5: 1 in the presence of an alkaline condensation agent to form formaldehyde acetals of pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol, the reaction mixture containing between 50 and 80% by weight of water, and then hydrolysing the acetals to pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol. The hydrolysis of the acetals may be carried out by acids, e.g. formic, acetic, oxalic or benzenesulphonic acid, at a temperature of at least 150 DEG C.
