Abstract

a -Hydroxyisobutyric acid is produced by reacting isobutylene with dinitrogen tetroxide in a mole ratio of at least one mole of dinitrogen tetroxide per mole of isobutylene at a temperature below 40 DEG C. to produce a -nitratoisobutyric anhydride or a -nitratoisobutyraldehyde and mixtures thereof, and converting these products by oxidation and hydrolysis into a -hydroxyisobutyric acid. The dinitrogen tetroxide may be employed in the form of a mixture with dinitrogen trioxide. The further oxidation and/or hydrolysis of the intermediates may be carried out at temperatures between 0 DEG C. and 150 DEG C. The intermediates may be separated from the reaction mixture and subsequently converted or they may be treated in situ. Thus the only further treatment may be an additional standing at an elevated temperature. Nitric acid may be added to facilitate the oxidation and the hydrolysis may be accomplished by use of water, aqueous acid solutions or aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solutions. The oxidation and hydrolysis may be carried out separately or as one step. Subsequent to the oxidation there can be recovered both a -nitrato- and a -hydroxyisobutyric acid. The a -nitratoisobutyric acid may be precipitated selectively by cooling the reaction mixture, and the resulting solution may be evaporated to obtain a -hydroxyisobutyric acid.
